How to increase the download speed on your PS5

Sony recommends keeping your device firmware up to date for the best gaming experience. While some PS5 firmware updates affect minor details, some can dramatically improve system performance. For example, previous updates included the addition of custom settings, such as low latency mode. If you notice your PS5 downloading at a slower rate than usual, it may need a firmware update.

There are two different ways to update the console software, the first is through the Uploads and Downloads section:

  1. Turn on the PlayStation 5 console.
  2. In the upper right corner of your screen, select Settings with the PlayStation button.
  3. Wait for the menu to appear.
  4. Choose Downloads/Downloads or the down arrow icon.
  5. Under Downloads/Copies, select System Software.
  6. Choose Update System Software.

You can also update your PS5 firmware through the System Settings tab:

  1. Turn on the PlayStation 5 console.
  2. In the upper right corner of your screen, select Settings.
  3. Select System.
  4. From the left menu bar, select System Software.
  5. Choose System Software Update & Settings.
  6. Select Update System Software.
  7. Select Update via Internet.

If none of these options work for you for some reason, you also have the option of installing the latest firmware using a USB flash drive by manually downloading the PS5 update file. This method should generally only be used if the console update is stuck and restarting the system doesn’t fix the problem, according to Sony.
