Night Sky Satellite Light Trail Delights Northerners

A line of twinkling lights spotted moving silently across the northern skies on Saturday has sparked excitement among local residents.

The Kan public broadcaster reported that the sightings were made around 10 p.m. – the same time the Starlink satellite chain was visible over Lebanon and Turkey.

Eyewitness Nofar told Channel 12 the line contained about 50 points of light and moved diagonally across the sky.

“It wasn’t a meteor, but like lights on a construction crane – but right in the middle of the sky,” Nofar said.

The Israeli military said it was unaware of any strange occurrence in the sky that could have caused the incident.

Some said the lights were seen over a swathe of territory stretching from Israel to Turkey, according to the report.

Videos of the lights have been posted on social media.

Starlink satellites, launched by the SpaceX company, are intended to provide satellite Internet services to dozens of countries.

Visibility in Israel and elsewhere can be checked on the FindStarlink website.

After its first satellite launch in February 2018, the completed network, which is expected to be fully deployed in the coming months, will include some 1,600 satellites circling the Earth in low orbit.

Earlier this year, SpaceX chief executive Elon Musk ordered Starlink equipment to be sent to Ukraine to enable internet connections to the country after it invaded Russia in February.
